Sunny with a chance of missed opportunity
By http://profile.typepad.com/1237764140s22740 // July 9, 2012 in SeattleSeattleites, did you see the article in the New York Times business section yesterday about the computer science department at the University of Washington?
Really upbeat. Portends well for Seattle's future. There is some interesting intelligence, too, about how Amazon has recently endowed a couple of professorships. Characteristically, the company comes off as reticent to discuss it!
Be sure to find the gray lining in the sunny picture:
"Mr. Lazowska said the university turned away about three quarters of all U.W. students who apply to major in computer science because it doesn't have the faculty to educate them, even though there is huge demand for engineers. . . .
"'This is having a serious impact,' he said, 'on the ability of small companies to grow and succeed and big companies to hire locally.'"
